We all depend on nature and biodiversity to lead a healthy and safe life. The air we breathe, what we eat or the water we drink depend on ecosystems and biodiversity. Our activity in the water cycle depends directly on the good state of the natural environment and the services it provides. Therefore, the conservation of biodiversity is part of Viaqua's main commitments.

Viaqua's commitment to protect and recover natural areas is based on actions aimed at raising awareness and preserving local biodiversity in the environments where its facilities are located through the BiObserva environmental volunteering program among its workers and workers.

This pioneering and innovative program is aimed at all the facilities managed by SUEZ group companies in Spain and involves workers in the management of the biodiversity of their work centers. In 2018, a total of 199 volunteers from 82 facilities throughout Spain participated in the project. Specifically in Galicia 324 observation days were conducted by 14 volunteers and reached more than 3,400 sightings.

On the occasion of World Biodiversity Day, the spring census is being carried out at the different facilities in Ourense, Santiago de Compostela and Pontevedra, where Viaqua's corporate environmental volunteer program is being developed. In the Drinking Water Treatment Station (ETAP) of Tambre, in Santiago, a collective census was conducted, where 12 different species of birds were observed, partly from 6 volunteers, the most frequent being: Blackbird, White Wagtail and Verderolo , among others. The presence of any of these species is an indicator of good environmental quality.

Through the BiObserva online platform, the general public can consult the information of birds that were seen in the different facilities. In this way, BiObserva is used to analyze the population trends of European birds, to know their migratory behavior as well as to contribute to the dissemination of citizen science in ornithology.
